Hamas Says Israel's Gaza Ceasefire Proposal "Positive"
In a significant development amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, Hamas has expressed a positive view of an Israeli ceasefire proposal outlined by U.S. President Joe Biden. This marks a potentially pivotal moment in the almost eight-month war that has ravaged the region.
President Biden, in a major address, introduced a three-phase roadmap aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire and peace in Gaza. The plan begins with a six-week complete ceasefire, during which Israeli forces would withdraw from all populated areas of Gaza. This phase would also see the exchange of hostages and prisoners, including the release of women, the elderly, and the wounded.
Following this initial phase, Israel and the Palestinians would engage in negotiations aimed at establishing a permanent ceasefire. The truce would remain in place as long as these talks continued. A third phase involves long-term reconstruction efforts, supported by the international community.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the proposal, expressing hope that it would lead to a lasting peace agreement. European leaders, including German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, also praised the proposal as a hopeful path towards resolving the conflict.
Hamas responded positively to Biden's proposal. In a statement, the group indicated that it "considers positively" the aspects of the ceasefire, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, reconstruction efforts, and the exchange of prisoners. This response from Hamas suggests a potential openness to negotiate, which could be crucial for moving forward.
Despite the positive response from Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that any ceasefire agreement must be conditional and aligned with Israel’s strategic objectives. Netanyahu insists that the war will not end until Hamas's military capabilities and governance are completely dismantled. His office stressed that the transition between the phases outlined by Biden would be contingent on achieving Israel’s goals, including the return of hostages and the elimination of Hamas's threat.
Even as these diplomatic efforts unfold, the situation on the ground remains dire. Israeli forces have advanced into central Rafah, escalating the conflict despite international objections.
