Vladimir Putin Warns of "Serious Consequences" if Western Arms Hit Russia
President Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning about the potential repercussions if Western countries allow Ukraine to use its weapons to strike targets within Russia. This comes as French President Emmanuel Macron suggested Ukraine should be allowed to neutralize Russian military bases used to launch missiles into Ukraine.
During a visit to Uzbekistan, Putin emphasized the risks of continued Western arms support for Ukraine. "This constant escalation can lead to serious consequences," he said, particularly highlighting the vulnerability of European countries with small territories and dense populations.
Macron's call for allowing Ukraine to target Russian military sites aligns with Kyiv's request for longer-range missiles. "We think that we should allow them to neutralize military sites where missiles are fired, from where... Ukraine is attacked," Macron stated while cautioning against targeting civilian areas.
Despite Macron's stance, the United States maintains its policy of not enabling the use of US-supplied weapons to strike inside Russia. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby reiterated, "There's no change to our policy at this point."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to seek more military support from Western allies. On a European tour, he stressed the importance of sustained international backing. "It is very important for Ukrainians that the world does not get tired... of the war launched by the aggressor," Zelensky said in Portugal.
Zelensky is also advocating for a peace conference in Switzerland next month, urging US President Joe Biden to attend. "If [Biden] is not present, it will be just like applauding Putin," he asserted.
The conflict in Ukraine remains a critical issue for global peace and security. Putin's warning highlights the delicate balance Western nations must navigate in supporting Ukraine without escalating the conflict further. The international community faces a complex challenge in addressing the crisis while working towards a peaceful resolution.
